Computer Chic is Here to Stay

A new phrase, although we complained every morning staring into the great abyss of our closets and the familiar refrain “I have nothing to wear” we still have to get up, get dressed and go to meetings. The commute is just a hell of a lot shorter.

At the beginning of the Covid shutdown and subsequent work from home directive I wore sweats to meetings, I didn’t wear makeup or jewelry and it worked for a while. It suited my mood of being confused, sad, lonely and the worst for me off schedule.

So, one easy solution was to keep going as if we weren’t finally coming out of a global dystopian adventure. I was going to walk into the closet and pick out an outfit for my wfh day. If I wouldn’t wear it to my actual office I wouldn’t wear it working from home. That was the rule.

As the world comes out of its cave a lot of us are still choosing to work from home and I’ve discovered the true meaning of Athletic chic. I’ve loved it and I’ve nurtured the concept before Covid, but now it’s everything. It may seem frivolous, but for me, it’s not. It’s structure and it’s feeling good about myself. It’s the proverbial great hair day (I do that too). When you look good you feel good and you do better.

I always layer. It looks good on screen because there’s texture and it looks put together and professional. The best part is pre and post meeting. I’m in menopause with my own private summers swinging to internal winters in the scope of a few minutes. A great white tee with a card or blazer and a scarf. More on scarves in general in future posts. I LOVE them.

Be a bottom and a top. Dress both. At first I did the screen version of my outfit only. A great top with PJ’s on the bottom. Then I got up to show my boss a great covid amazon buy…dress the top and the bottom. Besides, you catch a glimpse in the mirror and you need more than a C+ effort.

I’m still comfortable and that’s where the glory of Athleisure enters the story. Its’ sweaters vs. Blazers and soft dressing pants vs. jeans or trousers and something that deserves, and will get a column of its own, the white tee. Button industry beware – Elastic is coming for you.

Slippers – this I won’t give up. I know I said dress all of you, but feet don’t count be comfy, Dolls, splurge on some cute and comfier you don’t mind grabbing  the mail in. My favourite and don’t all attack me at once, UGG.

Accessories. I love my jewelery. It makes me happy and every piece means something to me. I’m not a jewellery to match my outfit kind of girl (although I love that). I’m a same pieces every day type. Classics and I missed wearing them. So, although for the most part they are not seen on screen – wear ‘em. This one’s for you. Don’t forget a hair accessory or two as well. I never wear ponies on the computer I just don’t suit them, but a cute ubiquitous headband – sold.

So, this 2 years at home gave me just a couple of lessons being the benefits of working in my little corner of the condo and it’s comfort, but make it Fashun!
