Let’s Pause on the positivity for a minute. I need to rant.
I just read a click bait article on “Things women over 40 should not wear”. My curiosity was piqued. Then I read through it and thought what judgemental idiot wrote this? A little hypocritical rant there, but I mean it – no one’s perfect.
No Sequins. Across the board, no exceptions – no sequins. I don’t know whether to just leave that where it is or not. Ok I won’t. Historically from it’s beginnings in the Arab world, to the Venetians and off to France (of course) sequins have adorned clothing for centuries. Sequins. Never. Go. Out. Of. Style. Not just adorning evening wear, but on sneakers and sweats. I’ll leave you with the immortal lesson of two of my fave fashion icons Stacy and Clinton “Texture, Pattern, SHINE” in every outfit. Makes it interesting. The writer of this article – you’re not interesting and you are no Stacy and Clinton.
No dangly key chains. Tell it to Louis Vuitton. What a keychain has to do with the over forty set I have yet to discover. It is a key chain. Besides it’s not likely we’re whipping them out in a meeting to show off our sparkly cat charm from Kate Spade. Right, Kate Spade loves them too.
The stupidity continued, but the sad thing I noticed about this practicing ageists forbidden list was it had one thing in common. The list was comprised of mostly feminine items. So, fifty faux’s can’t celebrate being a woman? A women with long hair can’t be a BOSS? High Heels and any other form of glamour are out? I have one word for you – Dystopian.
Listen, if you don’t like sequins, UGG boots and ditzy print dresses then don’t wear them. If you do – DO. Personal style goes to the heart of who you are and it’s got nothing to do with age.
God, please let this person not be a mother. Especially of girls. The idea of being thrown away after forty and not being seen as a woman still is prevalent and inspires a lot of my future blog posts. You, whoever you are, whatever age you currently are are going to get older and you’ll learn that, in fact you’re the same person (hopefully a bit wiser) and if you’re already in the FF age category you should know in 2020 there is no room for making people feel bad about expressions of individuality. This isn’t about fashion choices it’s about acceptance and women supporting women – I hear a lot about it I’d like to see more of it in action now.
My motto more than ever stands:
Sparkle often, Dolls.
